“You Don’t Blog Very Much”

January 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Brett said that. Multiple times. And he’s right, I don’t, or the way I see…at least I don’t yet.

The past two months I’ve been trapped in my room focusing solely on my qualifiers. It was a lot of work, more so than I imagined.  After going through the process, I understand why it can be a major event in a person’s life.  In fact, one of my professors, last semester, responded to the question of what was the toughest thing he ever did by saying “Qualifiers.  No doubt in my mind.”

But with my usual great timing I started my blog right before I started qualifiers.  As such, I’ve only had one post.  I plan on changing that and in doing so, my plan is to post once a week. To make it a little bit more realistic or perhaps I should say more of a habit, I’m going to shoot for writing and submitting my post by Friday.  And just to make my blog look a little bit more interesting, I’ll add an entry this Friday.

So it Starts

December 13th, 2007 · 3 Comments

As of right now…well, not right now, but approximately right now, as in a year and 8 months ago…there are currently over 27 million blogs. The actual number of blogs doesn’t matter just the order of magnitude. Millions and millions of blogs and here I just added another one. Actually, this is my second blog…the first was just for my travels during the World Cup. If you look at it from a marginal utility point of view (cause that’s what I do sometimes), the value of my blog is essentially zero. Actually, it might be negative. My blog might be generating negative utility for America. Crap.

I actually resisted creating a blog for a long time. While there are a variety of reasons, the top three were: I knew once I started it, I wouldn’t have enough dedication to keep it going (so if you’re following this blog, there’s probably only going to be 20 irregular posts); as mentioned before, I felt wouldn’t be adding to what Trudy Bell calls the babble of blogs; and finally, I’m lazy.

But for all reasons keeping me from creating a blog, I still wanted to do it.  It took me a long time to understand why this was the case and I believe I finally figured it out.  Before I always viewed any blog of mine would provide benefits to others.  Just like everybody else, I envisioned my blog helping the teeming masses find their way to enlightenment, getting accolades from the media and politicians, and drastically changing people’s lives.  All the wrong reasons to create a blog.

What I realized is this blog has to be for me.  Not for you, for me.  It has to be selfish in all ways possible.  I can’t write for the anonymous reader because if I do then I will start altering the subject matter I write about and my opinions expressed in a useless effort to try to generate comments.  Instead I’m going to use this blog to hash out my thoughts, try to clear my head, and make some sense of my reality.

So it starts, the beginning of educated insolence.
